  • Sessions: 1
  • Duration: 10 weeks

Summary and learning goals

In this module, basic empirical material is presented about the state of religious freedom in Latin America. The first session presents the approach of religious freedom by the Interamerican Human Rights System (IAHRS), composed of the Inter-American legal instrumentarium, the policies of the Organization of American States and its judicial entitities (the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights). The second session discusses why observing religious freedom in Latin America is so challenging. Considering the limitations of both the IAHRS and the existing data collection tools, the third and fourth sessions provide qualitative and quantitative information to describe the state of religious freedom in the region.

Learning goals:

  • Students are familiar with the approach of religious freedom by the IAHRS and its limitations;
  • Students are acquainted with the existing data collection tools of religious freedom violations and their limitations;
  • Students have a broad understanding of the main areas where religious freedom is restricted in Latin America.
